Shelter | Bus

UNFOLDING CHANGE Conceptual Intent and Analysis
A hurricane is the utmost change in the environment and poses a change in many aspects including a threat on the lives of individuals in the area. Such an event unfolds negative change, hurting the environment, animals, resources, and even people. People in this instance face the worst negative change in which their lifestyles might have drastically changed. The loss of their homes, property, or possibly even of their families, friends and loved ones are some of the hardships they must face. The truth of the matter is that the hurricane is unfolding a negative change all around and in order to help a positive change must be revealed. This positive change consists of the work and dedication of four hurricane relief workers. Lynn, Siu, Chris, and Chi Chi are people of all different backgrounds and lifestyles who find the disaster of a hurricane an extreme change to be made. Whether these workers come across victims in need of hospitality or a friend, each worker is qualified and willing to do whatever necessary to help. In order to give spaces for workers to help victims, pieces of their bus unfold by hinge, opening to the outside. In order to create an indoor/outdoor environment the floors, ceilings, and walls slide and expand to create extra rooms which can be fully enclosed by curtain. This extra space is used as a nurse’s station and resting area, fully accessible from the outside in. Another example of creating extra space is the 4’X4’ space above the driver’s cab which extends outside the bus shell about three feet. This space provides relaxation and escape, perhaps a place where Lynn can play guitar peacefully. When inside this space it is possible to slide back the top ceiling to reveal either extra head space or an exit to the outdoor roof. If space around the bus is unavailable, then perhaps a rooftop is a nice space to train for a marathon or just relax. All in all, the shelter bus provided for the hurricane relief workers unfolds a positive change to relieve the effects of the hurricane’s negative changes. The goal in this circumstance is to make hurricane victim’s lives better or easier and to revive the waning environment. The shelter bus helps achieve this goal by providing function for the many purposes of a relief worker and by relating to the needs of each individual worker. By helping the workers, the bus helps unfold a positive change. Material Investigation and Justification
Transparency, layers, sliding elements, and function are all important aspects in this design. In procession, the shelter bus started out by looking at possible floor plan and layouts of the functional spaces. Through this process spaces for certain needs are placed in particular accommodating spaces. For example, the small space above the driver’s cab; it serves as a “get-away” and is located at the top of the bus on the opposite end of the public spaces. Sliding walls, ceilings, and floors all may be impractical ideas, but function with the idea of a sliding door, an acoustical door to be particular. By these pieces sliding creates an opportunity to create a whole new space outside the bus’s shell, while still conforming to the shape of the shell during transition to and from locations. This allows the spaces to be functional while either the bus is in motion or parked for transformation. Transparency and layers in the exterior glass structure of the bus tell us that there is something going on inside but it is not quite clear until it is unfolded letting the inside out and the outside in. This transparency creates and outdoor/indoor space on its own by the sense of visibility through the bus.
